While we were out for a walk at Strumpshaw Fen, Mark spotted a kestrel hunting over a field. We stopped to watch and were amazed when it landed nearby – and even more so when it stayed long enough for me to take photos.
A volunteer in the information centre said it was a young one so maybe that’s why it was less cautious? Even with Freya’s non-stop chatter it stuck around for a bit.
Hope you’ve had a good week – especially if it’s been half term.

Also, please pop back tomorrow when I have another Behind The Book interview – this time with the amazing Elisabeth Gifford.
It takes some amazing timing and luck to get an image of a bird of prey. I never seem to be in the correct place at the correct time! Very impressed you got these images, especially with Freya chatting away!

Thank you, John. Freya was not only chatting but also doing a bit of free dance so I’m amazed it waited as long as it did 🙂

Wow, it’s amazing that it stayed so still. I’m sure a child’s chatter would have driven it away 99 times out of 100.

Me too! Especially as she wasn’t being particularly quiet 🙂

Hi Tara, what a beautiful shot. I’m no expert but I agree she could well be a young one (I say she as I think she looks like a girl, nothing more scientific than that). It’s not unusual for us to see buzzards on telegraph poles, but I have yet to get a good photograph of one… Love the name Strumpshaw Fen! It even sounds English.

Oh Kestrals are so beutiful aren’t they! How lovely to be able to photograph one in all it’s glory. They definitely always shoot off before I get the chance to snap away!
